Membership

The membership, objectives and activities of the UEMS and its sections are determined by the Statutes of the UEMS. The full text of the Statutes can be found on the main UEMS site. Below are short excerpts regarding the membership of the sections and their boards.

Article 4

  1. Full active members
    1. UEMS is composed of at least three full active members, legal persons, legally constituted in keeping with the laws and customs of their country of origin; at least one member shall be Belgian.

      Any organization representative of medical specialist doctors, described in points a) and b) below, and having legal personality or constituted in keeping with the laws and customs of its country of origin can also become a full active member of the UEMS with voting rights.

      The conditions for admission to the UEMS are the following:

      1. only the most representative non-governmental national professional organization of an European country representing medical specialists may become a full active member of the UEMS;
      2. the above mentioned organizations are full active members when they have legal personality in one of the countries of the European Union or in a signatory country of the European Economic Area agreement.

    2. The member organizations are represented on the Management Council by one or two delegates and/or their alternates if they have been duly given a mandate. Each delegation may add one or two experts, The status of specialist doctor is required for eligibility to take a seat in the Management Council and in the various committees or working parties created by it, in particular the specialist sections.

      IV. SPECIALIST SECTIONS

Article 21

  1. The UEMS may create, within its association, study sections at the level of each specially at the rate of one section per specially. The status of specialist doctor effectively practising the specially concerned is required to represent a full or associate member within these sections which shall be named "specialist sections of the UEMS".
  2. Each specialist section exists solely as a group of specialist doctors in their specially expressly mandated by the Management Council acting in the name of the UEMS. Each specialist section is responsible to the Management Council, and exclusively to the latter, and must regularly report on all its activities. It does not enjoy, therefore, any autonomy whatsoever.
  3. Each specialist section develops its activities strictly within the terms of reference specified for it by the Management Council, initiatives which it is called upon to take, must directly or indirectly relate to the specially which it represents. It shall not have direct relations with third parties external to the UEMS, without the express agreement of the Executive Committee or the Management Council, the latter forming the obligatory intermediaries for referring any motion to third parties of for any action taken in the broadest sense of the term.
  4. Each specialist section may create its own European Board as a working group with the aim to guarantee the highest standards of care in the field of the specialty in the countries of the European Union, by ensuring that the training is raised to the highest possible level.

The membership of the Specialist Section of Psychiatry and the European Board of Psychiatry is the same and include representatives of national psychiatric associations in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and UK.

Apart from its full members, the Section and Board have a number of associate member countries: Croatia, Cyprus, Turkey and most recently, Israel. Furthermore, a number of other bodies hold observer status. These are the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP), European Federation for all Psychiatric Trainees (EFPT), Permanent Working Group (PWG), World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), through its Mental Health Regional Advisor. All new delegates to the UEMS Section and Board of Psychiatry are required to complete the Membership Form containing a data protection statement. By signing the statement you give permission to the Section and Board to keep your personal data in accordance with the Data Protection Act. The list is not in the public domain and we will not disclose your contact details to third parties without your express permission.
